Lightboard Lessons: What is BIG-IP?

Posted in security, f5, big-ip, silva, video, application delivery, lightboard, devcentral by psilva on May 10th, 2017

In the early days of F5, BIG/IP was our original load balancer. Today, BIG-IP is a family of products covering software and hardware designed around application availability, access control, and security solutions.

In this Lightboard Lesson, Peter Silva lights up the various BIG-IP modules and what they do.

Lightboard Lessons: SSO to Legacy Web Applications

IT organizations have a simple goal: make it easy for workers to access all their work applications from any device. But that simple goal becomes complicated when new apps and old, legacy applications do not authenticate in the same way.

In this Lightboard Lesson, I draw out how VMware and F5 helps remove these complexities and enable productive, any-device app access. By enabling secure SSO to Kerberos constrained delegation (KCD) and header-based authentication apps, VMware Workspace ONE and F5 BIG-IP APM help workers securely access all the apps they need—mobile, cloud and legacy—on any device anywhere.

Lightboard Lessons: DNS Scalability & Security

Posted in security, f5, big-ip, silva, video, dnssec, lightboard, devcentral, dns by psilva on September 21st, 2016

The Domain Name Service (DNS) is one of the most important components in networking infrastructure, enabling users and services to access applications by translating URLs (names) into IP addresses (numbers). Because every icon and URL and all embedded content on a website requires a DNS lookup, loading complex sites necessitates hundreds of DNS queries.

DNS lookups has exploded in recent years with mobile, IoT and the applications to support the growth. It is also a vulnerable target. In my first Lightboard Lesson, I show you how to scale, secure and consolidate your DNS infrastructure.

My Blog Roll 2015

It’s that time of year when we gift and re-gift, just like this text from last year. And the perfect opportunity to re-post, re-purpose and re-use all my 2015 blog entries. If you missed any of the 89 attempts including 59 videos, here they are wrapped in one simple entry. I read somewhere that lists in blogs are good. I broke it out by month to see what was happening at the time and let's be honest, pure self-promotion.

Thanks for reading and watching throughout 2015.

Have a Safe and Happy New Year.

Ask the Expert – Why Identity and Access Management?

Posted in security, f5, big-ip, cloud computing, silva, video, authentication, AAA by psilva on November 4th, 2015

Michael Koyfman, Sr. Global Security Solution Architect, shares the access challenges organizations face when deploying SaaS cloud applications. Syncing data stores to the cloud can be risky so organizations need to utilize their local directories and assert the user identity to the cloud. SAML is a standardized way of asserting trust and Michael explains how BIG-IP can act either as an identity provider or a service provider so users can securely access their workplace tools. Integration is key to solve common problems for successful and secure deployments.

Ask the Expert – Why Web Fraud Protection?

Posted in security, f5, big-ip, application security, silva, video, web application, infrastructure by psilva on November 3rd, 2015

Corey Marshall, Security Solution Architect, explains why the browser is a new threat vector into an organization’s applications and infrastructure. This universal client can be the weakest link in the access chain and malicious characters are focusing on this as an avenue to steal information. Web fraud can be detrimental to both users and organizations alike and Corey explains some specific business scenarios along with F5 fraud protection services that can provide visibility into behavior anomalies and protect the client side against data leakage.
